Small moves · HA6

Man and van
in Northwood.

Not everything needs a four-person crew and a Luton. A room, a part load, a single substantial item — booked properly, with a real time slot rather than a gap between bigger jobs.

Most of our smaller work in HA6 falls into two groups. There are the apartment moves around the station and Northwood Hills — studios and one-beds changing hands, often on a tenancy cycle. And there are the single-item jobs from the larger houses: a piece bought at auction, something going to a family member, a desk that will not fit in an estate car.

What people book it for

  • A studio or one-bed apartment, start to finish
  • A single room out of a shared or family house
  • One substantial item — a sofa, wardrobe, dresser, safe, American fridge
  • Auction, antique-dealer and showroom collections
  • Part loads sharing a van with another job on the same route
  • Moving something to or from a family member's house
  • The last of it, after the main removal has gone
  • Runs into and out of storage

Collections, specifically

Worth a paragraph because it is a larger share of small jobs here than in most areas. Auction lots and dealer pieces are frequently old, frequently valuable and almost never packed by the seller.

Tell us what it is and roughly its age and condition. We would rather arrive with proper wrapping, corner protection and a second pair of hands than discover a marquetry cabinet waiting on a loading bay with nothing around it.

The three questions

Which floor, at both ends. What the heaviest item is. And where the vehicle can stand — which in HA6 also means whether the address is on a private road with its own rules. Those three settle a small job faster than any amount of description.

Where it stops

We will tell you when you have outgrown it. A house here is a house removal, and an apartment with real volume is apartment removals. Neither is us upselling — doing either in van-loads costs you more.

And a grand piano is a piano specialist, not a man and van, however willing everyone is.

Man and van questions

Is a small job worth booking with you?

Yes, and it gets a real time slot rather than being wedged between two larger moves. The reason small jobs have a bad reputation in this trade is that they are usually treated as filler; that is a scheduling choice, not an inevitability.

One person or two?

Decided by the heaviest item and the stairs. A few boxes and a desk is one. A sofa bed down from a top-floor apartment is not, and sending one person would simply waste your morning and ours.

Can you collect a piece of furniture we have bought?

Regularly — auction lots, antique dealers, furniture showrooms and private sellers. Given the area, auction and dealer collections come up often, and those usually want proper wrapping rather than a blanket and optimism. Tell us what it is and we will bring the right materials.

Do you do part loads out of the area?

Yes. For a small amount travelling a long way, sharing a vehicle already heading that direction is usually better value than a van doing the round trip. The trade-off is that it goes on the vehicle's schedule rather than yours.

When is it the wrong service?

Once you are past a small apartment. Doing a Northwood house in van-loads costs far more in hours than a proper removal, and we will say so rather than take the booking and watch it run into the evening.

Got a smaller job?

Both addresses, the floor at each end, and the heaviest item. If it is a collection, tell us what it is.
