House removals
in Northwood.
The houses here are larger and older than the national average, and they hold more than anybody expects. That is the whole story of moving in HA6, and it is why we survey properly first.
Northwood's housing was built for a different kind of household — substantial detached properties on generous plots, put up between the wars when the Metropolitan line made the commute practical. Arts-and-crafts frontages, mock-Tudor gables, generous Edwardian proportions.
Ninety years later they are full, and several of them have been extended twice.
What the day includes
Protection down first at both properties — floors, door frames, bannisters, and the staircase in particular. Furniture dismantled where it needs to be, with fixings kept attached to the piece. Everything wrapped before it goes near a doorway. Loaded in an order that makes the unload sensible. Then carried in, placed where you want it, and the beds rebuilt before we leave.
- In-person survey for anything larger than an apartment
- Full, part or fragile-only packing
- Wardrobe cartons so hanging clothes travel on the hanger
- Antiques, art and polished furniture wrapped rather than blanketed
- Beds, wardrobes and tables dismantled and rebuilt
- Storage where completion dates will not align
Where these houses are awkward
The staircase
Often the finest thing in the house and the most expensive to repair. Galleried landings, turned bannisters, original treads. We board and pad the whole route, and we plan which large pieces go up or down before anything is lifted rather than working it out halfway.
Furniture that predates the walls
A recurring feature of long-occupied houses. A wardrobe carried into a bedroom in 1974, before the ensuite was partitioned off, may genuinely not come back out the same way. The options are dismantling, a window, or accepting it stays — and all three are much better discussed at survey.
Everything that is not the house
Cellars, converted lofts, garages, sheds, garden rooms and summerhouses. Between them they account for most of the difference between an estimate and reality here, and they are genuinely easy to forget — you stop seeing the garage.
Private roads
A good share of HA6 addresses sit on private roads, and Moor Park is an entire estate of them. Access arrangements, permitted hours and where a vehicle may stand are set by the estate rather than the council. We check in advance — see Moor Park removals.
The quote
Volume, distance and access, put in writing with what would change it. No figure appears on this site because the honest number for a six-bedroom house on Green Lane is not the honest number for a flat by the station, and printing either would mislead somebody.
An apartment instead? Apartment removals. A smaller load? Man and van. Leaving the country? Moving to Europe.
House move questions
Why survey in person rather than by video?
Because these houses do not photograph honestly. A video call will show you rooms; it will not show you the cellar, the converted loft, the garden room, the garage that has been accumulating since the 1990s, or the fact that the wardrobe on the top landing went in before the ensuite wall did. Half an hour on site settles all of it.
How many people will you send?
Sized by the house, not by the bedroom count. A large interwar detached with a loft and outbuildings genuinely needs more hands than a new-build of the same nominal size, and under-crewing it is how a move turns into a twelve-hour day. We would rather quote a realistic crew than the cheapest one.
Will you take original doors off?
Where it is the only way a piece can pass, and with your agreement — carefully, with the hinges and screws kept together and the door rehung before we leave. In period houses it is sometimes the difference between a piece coming out intact and not coming out at all.
What about the driveway?
Worth mentioning at survey. Long gravel drives are common here and a loaded trolley does not travel well on gravel, so the carry takes longer and we plan for it. If the drive will not take a large vehicle we will bring something smaller and shuttle.
Can you work around us staying in the house?
Yes. Plenty of local moves here are staged over more than one day, particularly when a family is downsizing or a renovation is involved. Tell us what needs to remain usable and we will work in that order.
