Northwood → Italy

Removals from Northwood
to Italy.

The longest overland run of the four and the one with the most waiting at the far end — Alpine tunnels, camera-enforced traffic zones, and buildings that predate removal vehicles by centuries.

Three things to arrange early

Your codice fiscale. The import entry cannot be completed without it.

Traffic-zone access. If the address is inside a historic centre, delivery needs a permit from the comune, and that shapes what hour the vehicle can be at the door.

Whether the building will take the furniture. In older blocks the answer is frequently no and the solution is a hoist — much better established before a load is in the Alps.

The route, and winter

M25 to the Channel, across France towards Lyon, then over the Alps — Mont Blanc into the Aosta valley or Fréjus into Turin — and onto the Italian motorway network.

The Alpine section is what makes this route different. Tunnel restrictions and weather closures are ordinary rather than exceptional, so the transit window is wider than for France or Spain. We say so at the quote.

Where these moves go

Milan and the north

The commonest destination for work-related moves. An apartment, a permit, a booked window, and a lift that will not take a sofa.

Tuscany and Umbria

Farmhouses at the end of an unmade white road with a gate — and usually a renovation in progress. Small-vehicle territory for the last stretch, and worth photographing before we quote.

The lakes

Como, Garda and Maggiore. Lakeside property with steep access and frequently steps down from the road, which is a carrying problem rather than a driving one.

Rome and the south

Historic-centre permits, internal courtyards and hoists in Rome. Further south the issue is distance and service frequency rather than access.

Period furniture on this route

The Italian route is the longest and the most variable in temperature — Alpine cold followed by Mediterranean warmth within a couple of days. That swing is harder on veneered and polished furniture than the distance is, and it is the clearest case of the four for export packing and, on exceptional pieces, crating.

Quoting it

The region, the nearest town, whether the property is habitable on arrival, the access, and how firm the date is. If building work is still running, say so. See European removals for method, or France, which shares the first half.

Northwood to Italy — questions

What is a codice fiscale?

The Italian tax code. The import entry cannot be completed without one, and you will need it for almost everything else in Italy. Obtain it before the move.

What is a ZTL?

A limited traffic zone. Most Italian historic centres have one, camera-enforced, and entering without a permit produces fines weeks later. Access is arranged with the comune in advance and the delivery timed around the permitted window — it is the most common way an Italian move costs more than it should.

Does winter matter on this route?

More than on any other of the four. The Alpine tunnels carry lorry restrictions and can queue or close in bad weather, which widens the transit window. We build that into the estimate rather than explaining it afterwards.

Will the building take our furniture?

In older Italian blocks, often not through the stairwell. An exterior hoist through a window or balcony is the standard solution there rather than an exotic one, and we arrange it where that is the right answer.

Our property is mid-renovation.

Very common on this route, particularly with the farmhouse purchases. Delivering into a property with no finished floors or no lockable door is how furniture is ruined. We will ask what state it is in and hold the load rather than unload into a building site.

Moving to Italy?

Both addresses, roughly what is going, and whether the property is on a private road. We will arrange a survey and put the figure in writing.
