Removals from Northwood
to France.
The closest of the four and the commonest second-home destination from this part of north-west London. Which of those two it is — a move or a second property — decides the paperwork before anything else.
Settle the question first
Are you moving your home, or furnishing a second one? From HA6 it is genuinely often the latter, and the two are declared differently.
A change of residence brings relief, evidenced with property documents and proof you are leaving the UK address. A maison secondaire does not. Neither route is difficult; getting it wrong at the start and correcting it at a border is.
The route
The A404 and M25 are minutes from Northwood, then round to the M20 and into Folkestone or Dover. From Calais the motorway network fans out — west towards Normandy and Brittany, south-east towards Reims and Lyon, and straight down into Paris.
Where these moves go
Paris
Apartment moves with constraints that will feel familiar if you have moved out of a large period house: a small lift, a service stair, a courtyard with a fixed width, a gardien to notify, and sometimes an exterior hoist.
Normandy, Brittany and the west
Stone houses, longères and renovation projects. Rural approaches where the last stretch decides the vehicle rather than the volume.
The south and south-west
The Dordogne, Charente, Provence and the Côte d'Azur. Long runs, almost always groupage, and the destination for most of the second-home consignments we send.
Furniture, specifically
Two practical notes. Older French houses have narrower doorways and tighter stairs than the interwar houses here — large British wardrobes in particular have a habit of not fitting where they were imagined. Measure before deciding a piece is coming.
And stone-built properties that have stood empty are colder and damper than anything in HA6. Air the house before soft furnishings and period wooden furniture arrive.
Quoting it
The destination department, whether it is permanent or a second home, roughly the volume, the access at the French end, and anything that needs special handling. See the European removals page for groupage against a dedicated vehicle.
Northwood to France — questions
Second home or permanent move?
It changes the paperwork entirely, and from this area it is a question worth asking early — a good share of France moves from HA6 are furnishing a property rather than relocating to it. Transfer-of-residence relief applies to moving your household, not to a maison secondaire. Both are straightforward; they are simply declared differently.
Is Paris much like moving here?
Closer than you would expect. Haussmann apartment buildings present the same constraints as a large period house with a narrow stair: a lift built for people not furniture, a service stair that is the real route, a gardien to notify, and a courtyard entrance with a hard width limit.
Will a lorry reach a rural property?
Often not the final stretch. Village streets built for carts, stone archways with a fixed height, and farm tracks that soften after rain. We shuttle with a smaller vehicle for the last part — photographs of the final approach are the most useful thing you can send.
What about antique furniture on this route?
It travels well when packed properly and badly when it is not. Anything with veneer, marquetry or a polished finish gets wrapped and corner-boarded rather than blanketed. On genuinely exceptional pieces we will recommend crating for that item.
Does someone need to be there for delivery?
Someone with keys and any gate or door codes, yes. French addresses very often need a person on site, and an arrangement with a neighbour wants confirming rather than assumed.
Moving to France?
Both addresses, roughly what is going, and whether the property is on a private road. We will arrange a survey and put the figure in writing.
