Removals from Northwood
to Portugal.
The furthest of the four. Two crossings' worth of country before you arrive — France, then the width of Spain — and a destination that has broadened well beyond the Algarve.
The NIF first
Before anything else. The Portuguese tax number is required for the import entry and for essentially every transaction in the country. Household goods move as baggagem, a personal-effects import tied to a change of residence, supported by a certificate of residence and an inventory that matches the load.
The journey, described honestly
There is no direct route. Your belongings cross to France, run south past Bordeaux, cross the Pyrenees, traverse Spain, and then enter Portugal — and which Spanish route depends entirely on whether the destination is Porto, Lisbon or the Algarve.
It is the longest of the four routes and the transit window reflects that. We would rather tell you at the quote than have you watching a tracker.
Where these moves go
The Algarve
Still the largest by volume from this area, and the most predictable to deliver into — with the usual exception of hillside villas on steep private drives.
Lisbon
The growth destination and the hardest delivery of the four countries. Narrow streets, real gradients, and buildings where a hoist is the only way furniture goes in.
Porto, the Silver Coast and the interior
Porto has an old centre as constrained as Lisbon's; the surrounding countryside is not constrained at all. Inland — Tomar, Coimbra, the Silver Coast — means more land, more renovation, and rural tracks that decide the final vehicle.
Damp, and why it matters more here
This is the most Portugal-specific piece of advice and the one most often skipped. Houses that have stood empty — particularly older stone properties and anywhere near the coast — hold a great deal of moisture.
For the kind of furniture that comes out of a Northwood house — period wooden pieces, rugs, upholstered furniture — unloading into a damp property is a genuine risk rather than a theoretical one. Open the house up and air it thoroughly for as long as you can before delivery day. If that is not possible, tell us and we will hold the load.
Quoting it
Destination region, property type, access at the far end, rough volume, date flexibility, and anything needing special handling. The European removals page covers groupage scheduling, which matters more here than on any other route. If you are weighing this against Spain, the transport is similar and the paperwork is not.
Northwood to Portugal — questions
What do we need before the move?
A NIF — the Portuguese tax number. The import entry needs it and so does renting, buying and most of daily life there. Without one the paperwork cannot be completed and the load waits.
What does "baggagem" mean?
The Portuguese term for a personal-effects import accompanying a change of residence. It carries relief where the conditions are met, supported by a certificate of residence and an inventory matching the load.
Why does it go through Spain?
Because there is no realistic direct route from the Channel. A Portuguese move is a French run, then a Spanish transit, then a final leg — which is why it is the longest of the four and why the transit window is wider. We would rather say that than imply it is a short hop.
Is Lisbon difficult to deliver into?
In the older districts, yes. Alfama and Bairro Alto have narrow streets, severe gradients and buildings where the stairwell will not take furniture — hoists are common. Tell us the district and the floor and it is planned rather than discovered.
The house has been empty for months.
This is the Portugal-specific warning worth heeding, particularly with period furniture. Houses that stand empty get damp, and unloading wooden furniture, rugs and soft furnishings straight into one is how people find mould a fortnight later. Air it thoroughly before delivery day, or let us hold the load while you do.
Moving to Portugal?
Both addresses, roughly what is going, and whether the property is on a private road. We will arrange a survey and put the figure in writing.
