The most travelled British moving route in Europe, which means the procedures at the far end are well worn — and that the delays are predictable. Almost all of them are paperwork rather than transport.
The NIE comes before everything
Before dates, before volume, before you ask anyone for a figure. Spain is stricter than France about who may import household goods under relief, and the gate is your NIE together with evidence of residence — usually the padrón registration or a residence card — plus the property documents.
We prepare the export side and work with a Spanish agent on the import entry. We cannot obtain your NIE for you, and starting it late is the single most common reason a Spanish move stalls.
The route
M25 to the Channel, then south through France on the western corridor past Bordeaux, over the Pyrenees, and into Spain by whichever crossing suits the destination. It is a long overland run and almost always groupage.

Access at the Spanish end
The historic centre of almost any Andalucian town has streets a rigid lorry cannot enter, so the last leg becomes a smaller van and more carrying. Hillside urbanizaciones present the same problem differently — a steep private drive with nowhere to turn, which will feel familiar if you are leaving a long gravel driveway in Northwood.

What to send, and what not to
Worth genuine thought from a house of this size. Spanish properties are laid out differently: appliance gaps are a different size, wardrobes are more often built in, and the quantity of heavy furnishing that suits an interwar English house rarely suits a Spanish one.
Period furniture is the exception worth paying to move properly — it is the part that cannot be replaced, and it is the part that suffers most in transit without export packing.

What actually delays a Spanish move?
The NIE, almost every time. Spain will not release household goods under relief without a foreigner identification number and evidence of residence, and obtaining it is entirely your side of the job. Loads wait on that document far more often than on any vehicle.
Which border crossing?
Destination decides it. The Mediterranean crossing feeds the coast road for Barcelona, Valencia, Alicante and Málaga; the Atlantic crossing serves the Basque country, Cantabria, Asturias and Galicia.
How do the islands work?
Both the Balearics and the Canaries need a sea leg after the mainland run, so they are scheduled rather than continuous. The Canaries also sit outside the EU customs union, which changes the paperwork again — tell us the island at the outset.
Will a lorry reach the property?
Two recurring problems: old-town streets in Andalucía that a rigid vehicle cannot enter, and hillside urbanizaciones with a steep private drive and no turning space. Both are solved with a smaller van and a longer carry, and both are far cheaper arranged in advance.
Should everything come?
Worth a proper conversation, particularly from a house of this size. Spanish kitchens are fitted to different dimensions, wardrobes are more often built in, and a good deal of heavy furnishing that makes sense in an interwar house in HA6 does not make sense on the Costa Blanca.
